Artistic Director / Choreographer

SARAH ZEHNDER  creates dances that seek to challenge, excite and surprise the mind through the power of the moving body. With boldness and architectural precision, she forms relationships that evoke emotion and attention to the human experience. Zehnder draws on her unique choreographic background in hip-hop as well as her investigation in powerful physicality.

Zehnder began her dance training as a self-taught hip-hop dancer and was introduced to modern dance in college where her passion for choreography grew stronger. She received her Bachelor of Science in Dance from Bowling Green State University and her MFA from The College at Brockport, State University of New York. She founded Zehnder Dance in 2010 and has steadily gained recognition for her articulate choreographic vision performing in such prestigious festivals as Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out, Midwest RAD Festival and the Women in Dance Project at Ailey Citigroup Theatre. She has been invited to share evenings on numerous occasions with NYC choreographers including Raja Kelly, Kensaku Shinohara, and Arisa Kusumi. Subsequently, she was awarded the Bossak/Heibron Charitable Foundation grant to support the creation of Pulling to Pieces as well as a space residency at Chen Dance Center. Zehnder has also choreographed music videos for upcoming artists such as Nikki Jonet. Furthermore, she has shared her choreographic vision through faculty positions as a Guest Artist at Dance New Amsterdam, Gibney Dance Center, Grand Canyon University, Scottsdale Community College, SUNY Brockport, Glendale Community College and Queens College.
